Meeting began at 9:20 am

 1.   Opening remarks by President Sam Karamoutzos

  •  190 students enrolled this year - improvement over last year!

  • Open Forum to discuss any topic.

  • There is a review of 1982 By-Laws for Greek School underway.

  • By-Law committee is made up of our priest Father Elias, Greek School Committee, Parents and Advisors.  We are in need of one or more parents to be on the committee.

  • the Education Committee currently has 7 members.  One or two members had resigned and we need them replaced.

  • it was suggested that we advertise in a flyer or church bulletin for anyone interested in being on the Education committee.

  • also suggested the Greek Radio would be a good place to advertise for help and or to publicize meetings, and meetings should include teachers as well as parents.

 2Class Related Concerns:

  • it was raised that  4 hours is too long for primary students, Joanne said it depends how the 4 hours is broken up and how the time is used..

  • it was also raised that JK and SK's slot for dance might be too early to send them for dance instruction.  Steve indicated that it was the opposite last year, and the fact of the matter is that there is only 1 gym facility with a limited number of hours.  Joanne suggested that maybe it could be utilized on a rotating basis.  Steve indicated that we cold use volunteers to help with dance class.

  • Steve reported that the new books will arrive in November.  There were concerns that the current books are too hard and that the level is too high for these kids.  The teachers need the ok to prepare lesson materials on their own and ideally we could make our own books.

  • one parent questioned whether putting homework assignments on the website is a good idea as then there is not a need for children to come to school.  Steve said it is advantageous when kids miss a Saturday that they are able to get caught up for the next time.  Sam indicated that the parents themselves had asked for the availability of a website with this information.

  • There was a recommendation from a parent that the primary kids be exposed to more role playing and practical phrases.  The current books are far too advanced and difficult.  Sam responded that the teachers are free to pick and choose lessons throughout the text book that  will better suit and accommodate their students.

  • There is some interest in holding Greek School during the week. Sam responded that this subject would have to be discussed with the Board of Education and the Community Council.  It was suggested that evening school could take place at Dundas and Highbury in one class for all grades.  However, custodial fees and weekday activities interfering are concerns.

3.  Fundraising:

  • selling McDonald's coupon booklets. They are available for $1.25 and could sell for $5.00.

  • Dance-a-thon with pledge sheets.

  • Litsa and Mary volunteered to organize Apokries dance-a-thon around March 1st or end of February

Closed meeting.  Meeting adjourned at 10:40 am.

4.  Future Parent Meeting

  •  Sunday, November 17th  4:00 - 6:00 pm.

  • at Church Basement Hall
