Meeting Minutes:  January 25, 2003

            


Education Committee of Holy Trinity Greek School of London

- Parents Open Meeting -

JANUARY 25, 2003   
9:15 – 10:30 AM @ ST. Martin School library

Present:   Sam Karamoutzos, John Tryphonopoulos, Bill Kiatos, Soula Kiakos,Litsa Lerikos, Mary Tsaltas, Anna Karmoutzos, Theo Karagias, Sophocles Katsademas, Jim Koudounis, Jayne Fragiskatos. Steve Eleftheroglou

1.  Meeting began at 9:20 am

2.  Introduction and Agenda Review

  • Read minutes from last  Parents meeting November 17, 2002

  • Mr. Karahalios called Sam Karamoutzos regarding interest in weekday school program.  Jim Gannoulis was approached and asked him to work via the Education Committee.  Sam asked Mr. Karahalios to le us know who is interested and to produce a sign-up sheet and we will discuss at the Education Committee meeting.

3.  Update on Oranges Fundraiser and Kalanta event

  • Sold approximately $1500 of oranges  with a profit of approximately  $800

  • Christmas carols:  Parents that did not attend the last parents meeting were not aware of the Christmas carol event.  It was suggested using the bulletin board and other means to let parents know and keep them informed of upcoming events.  

4.  Visit by Mr. Volonakis and Mrs. Skembi on March 29th

  • Mr. Volonakis who is the Education Liaison from the Archdiocese in Toronto,  will be visiting London on March 29th

  •  A meeting is set up for that day in the library for the parents to meet with him and discuss any issues with him and get an update on Greek education

  • There was discussion on the status of the books from the University of Crete.  Books destined for London should be arriving in Toronto anytime.  Steve Eleftheroglou will communicate with Mr. Volonakis that  that he needs to give us an update on the status of the books.  It was felt that it is not acceptable that books are available in Toronto and that London does not get them till much later.

  • For the visit, Soula Kiatos will bring paximadakia, and Sam will bring coffee.

  • Next parents meeting will be held in conjunction with this visit

  • Announcements will be placed on the radio (John T),  and Steve E. will include it as part of upcoming flyers going home

 5.  Letter’s Day Dance

  • Reviewed the program for the dance

  • Suggestion made to start earlier than 8:30 pm

  • At the dance, Mrs. Meni will be honoured for her many years of service and contributions to the Greek School of London.  It was suggested to have a young student give her flowers.

  • A proposal was put  forth to put together a “donations” form that can be used formally by members to approach individuals and companies for donations for different organized events.

  • Litsa suggested to have a “children’s snack bar”, popcorn, candy for Greek dance.

 

6.  Fundraising

    DANCE-A-THON

  • Litsa Lerikos and Mary Tsaltas have planned a “dance-a-thon” as the next fundraiser event.  

  •  “dance-a-thon” will be held on Februrary 22 at the school from 9:30am – 12:00 pm

  • details have been discussed with Steve E.

  • they have prepared the letter and pledge sheets to go home

  • Kids can make posters – can wear costume if they want

  • Bring tim bits and snacks for kids

  • Sam will ask his brother to provide the DJ music

  • January 25th and February 1st will be the kick-off in each class

  • Litsa will make the announcement at the Greek dance, and put an announcement on the Greek Radio

Talent Night

  • An event consisting of kids showing off any talents they have

  • Kids need to be hyped up, and parents to be encouraged to get involved.  But need to have enough kids in order to make it successful

  •  Anna Karamoutzos will help organize, and need more volunteers.  Will approach Joanne Makrakos and Vivi Tryphonopoulos to help out, and any other parents interested in helping out.

  •  Need to check whether community centre is available for May 3th, and investigate possible dates

Fundraising in Sarnia Greek community

  •  Sarnia Greek community will be participating in Canada Day celebrations (July 1st)

  •  Will be selling souvlaki

  • Asked Bill and Soula Katios to let London Greek community know

7.     Other Business

  • Next 2 By-law meeting of Committees will be held on February 20th and March 4th

  •  New Education Committee members are Thodoras Karagias, and Demetres Koudounis

  •  Demetres discussed his work on capturing contributions of key Greek personalities from current times to the present using the letters of the alphabet, and presenting it in an alphabetical format.  More will be discussed at the next meeting.

8.      Meeting adjourned at 10:50 am.

Next meeting to be held on Saturday March 29th.
