Red Maple Program

Cast your vote on your favourite book

All students in grades 7 and 8 at Orchard Park participate in this program.  The classroom teacher administers the program as part of the language curriculum.   Many of our students read all 10 titles.

The school purchases 10 copies each of the Silver Birch titles.  Many of our students try to read all 10 selections so that they are able to make very informed decisions when they vote.  As parents, you may wish to purchase a book for a Christmas present or put some of the titles on hold at the public library.

Happy Reading!

Ontario Library Association
Red Maple Award

(2002-2003)

The Red Maple Award reading program is offered for the enjoyment of students in Grades 7, 8 and 9. The program follows the pattern of the Association's Silver Birch Awards reading program, giving students who have read a minimum number of nominated titles the opportunity to vote with a large group of their peers for the nominated title that they feel should win the Red Maple Award each year.

All students in grades 7 and 8  at Orchard Park participate in this program.  The classroom teacher administers the program as part of the language curriculum.   Many of our students read all 10 titles.

About the Program

The Red Maple Award reading program brings an excellent selection of recent Canadian books to the attention of Ontario children and young adults. It rewards them for reading by making them the judges in a province-wide literary event. Through the participation of the youth, the Red Maple Award program encourages Canadian writing, Canadian authors, and the improvement of reading skills. The OLA's Red Maple reading program provides teachers, teacher-librarians, parents and writers with insight into young people's reading preferences. It affords the opportunity to honour and encourage imaginative authors who create works with appeal to Ontario's youth. Most importantly, children are given the opportunity to be involved. The children benefit through the obvious spur to reading that the program provides, but also through the opportunity to see their opinion honoured.
