Call for Job Application: Postdoctoral Researcher for National Social Science Fund Major Project at School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, Beijing, China

The National Social Science Fund Major Project “Multi-Civilizational Interaction and Integration in the Indian Ocean Region” (hereinafter “the project”) is based at the School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, and systematically conducts research on the history, culture, and mutual learning among civilizations in the Indian Ocean region. To further strengthen the research team and advance the project, the project now recruits full-time postdoctoral researchers from both within China and abroad. The details are as follows:

 

Post-doc Supervisor

Dr. Zhang Minyu, Program of International and Regional Studies, School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, and PI of the National Social Science Fund Major Grant Project “Multi-Civilizational Interaction and Integration in the Indian Ocean Region”.

 

Position

Full-time Postdoctoral Researcher (0-1 position)

Research Field: History and Culture of the Indian Ocean Region

Term of Appointment: Two years

Job Responsibilities:

1. Conduct independent research on historical documents and cultural exchanges related to the Indian Ocean region within the framework of this project.

2. Assist the supervisor in advancing the project’s academic research, collaborative exchanges, teaching, and public service.

 

Qualifications

1. Educational Background: A Ph.D. degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures, World History, or related fields obtained from a renowned university within the past three years.

2. Age Requirement: Generally not exceeding 35 years old.

3. Language Skills: Proficiency in English and mastery of at least one non-European language from South Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia, or Africa, with the ability to conduct research using primary source documents in the language(s).

4. Academic Ability: Solid academic training, possessing the professional knowledge and research capability to independently conduct research on the history, culture, and mutual learning among civilizations in the Indian Ocean region. Have published academic papers related to the research direction in important domestic or international academic journals, demonstrating academic standing among peers of similar age and outstanding potential.

5. Comprehensive Qualities: Strong moral character, rigorous scholarship, good team spirit, communication skills, and sense of responsibility, able to devote full-time effort to postdoctoral research.

6. Priority will be given to candidates meeting one or more of the following conditions:

(1) Have long-term experience studying, living, or conducting research in Indian Ocean region countries.

(2) Proficiency in French, Portuguese, Dutch, or other former colonial languages used in the Indian Ocean region, in addition to English.

(3) Possess teaching or research experience in related fields at universities or research institutions.

(4) For international applicants, proficiency in using Chinese for academic exchange, research writing, and daily work communication.

7. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be recommended to apply for the Peking University Boya Postdoctoral Fellowship. For requirements, please refer to the Office of Human Resources, Peking University.

 

Welfare and Benefits

1. Remuneration: The approximate pre-tax annual income for a regular full-time postdoctoral researcher is 120,000 RMB. For Boya Postdoctoral Fellows, the approximate pre-tax annual income is 200,000 RMB. Social insurance and housing fund will be contributed according to state and university regulations.

2. Housing: Postdoctoral researchers can apply for postdoctoral apartments based on their entry date, subject to availability. Those residing in university apartments pay rent at market rates. An annual housing subsidy of 60,000 RMB is provided to those not residing in university apartments.

3. Grant Applications: Encouragement and support to apply for various research or award funds, such as the International Exchange Program and the China’s Postdoctoral Science Foundation.

4. Other Welfare: Eligibility for benefits related to children’s schooling (kindergarten included), participation in the postdoctoral academic exchange program, and research performance awards.
